INTRODUCTION
 This booklet, giving the lineage and history of the
Potts-Carr family, was compiled by the three remaining members of the second
Australian generation of the Potts family.
In this year of 1967, the three remaining members of family
of nine children - Oliver, Jabez and Harold - felt that the family history
should be written and put In boo form, so that the third and fourth generations
of the family tree and those who follow in the years to come, will be apprised
of the people from whom they descended, and date concerning the births,
marriages and deaths of their predecessors It has entailed much research in
Australia an Great Britain. All the facts and dates have been certified and
should provide invaluable data to those now living an their descendants who will
follow in the years to come.
It covers the family lineage from the late 18th century to
the year 1967. Dates are given as far back as 1814 of John Carr, to 1967, of
Sharon Gibbons, great g-rand daughter of Jabez Potts.
The family tree has many ramifications and extend through
England, U.S.A., Northern Ireland. Holland, Franc and Australia.
The three members of the family feel that the Potts Carr
descendants have a heritage of which they can be justly proud. This applies from
the earliest predecessor mentioned right down through the line to the present
gene ration. Not only did our forebears come from sturdy well-educated stock,
but it is noteworthy that the Potts Carr families right up to the present
generation, all married people of equal birth and education. It is something to
be really proud of to belong to a family of such highly respect able and
well-educated people. Those who have come into the family through marriage are
welcomed as worthy citizens having, as they do, proud records of their own.
The recorded history of the family from 1814 has bee given,
and should make interesting reading.
The tendency has been to give in detail a cameo of Oliver and
Elizabeth Potts. They were the first generation of Australian born citizens of
the family. The incidents 1 their life as related in this book, will give an
indication of life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They we
real pioneers and faced a period in which the financial state
of Victoria was disrupted to such an extent that banks closed and the severest
depression ever experienced in Australia lasted from 1891 to 1914.
These two people had to carve out their lives in an era when
most people were out of work. Money was an almost unknown quantity and Poverty
reigned supreme. That they worked and brought UP a family of nine children-all
of whom made a success of their lives-is a triumph that is well worthy of
historical record.
All the members of the family, together with their partners
in life, have been recorded by the writer.
The genealogical tree of the family and their descendants,
together with all relevant dates, have been recorded.
It now remains, if any member wishes to continue their side
of the family tree, they have these records from which to work.
The compilers of the book present it to members of the family
in the hope that it will be read and kept as a family heirloom, to be handed
down to their successors.
