Introduction (2 pages)
In the late 1700s both Pennsylvania and Virginia laid claim
to what is now western Pennsylvania. To strengthen their claims, both states
encouraged their citizens to settle in this area. This resulted in a large
influx of settlers after the Revolutionary War. In about 1796 John Potts
(Johannes Patz), his wife Christina Portzer, and their first six children
arrived in Westmoreland County. They settled in Denmark Manor (now Penn
Township). The family, farmers all, were of German descent and belonged to the
Reformed or Lutheran Churches, from whence many of the records were obtained. It
is alleged that John and Christina had seventy-two grandchildren, but only
twenty-six are identified in this compilation.
