THE ELDEST SON WAS ALWAYS NAMED ISAAC, THROUGH TO THE LAST ISAAC (MY GREAT UNCLE) 1888-1962. IN 1997 I NAMED MY SON AIDAN ISAAC TO REVIVE THE TRADITION. ADLINGTON IS LOCATED NEXT TO 'POTT SHRIGLEY', ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT CAME FIRST, THE PLACE OR THE NAME. 2 YEARS I VISTED NORTUMBERLAND IN THE ENGLISH/SCOTTISH BORDERS. THE PHONE BOOK WAS FULL OF POTTS' FAMILIES. THEY WERE ONE OF THE FEARSOME BORDER REIVER CLANS WHO TOOK PART IN STEALING, CATTLE RUSTING AND VARIOUS CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES IN THE 1500/1600'S. THE MOST FEARED MEMBER WAS 'JOCK POTT THE BASTARD'. HE SOUNDS LIKE SOME CHARACTER. APPARENTLY A 'POTT' WAS A POOL/HOLE IN THE GROUND AND A PLACE STILL EXISTS CALLED 'POTTS DURTREES' NEAR OTTERBURN. THIS IS IN REDESDALE NEAR THE RIVER REDE WHERE THE POTTS CLAN LIVED. THIS AREA GETS QUITE A FEW MENTIONS IN THE ORIGINS OF THE POTTS NAME. WHETHER ALL POTTS CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THIS AREA WHO KNOWS. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK SO AS IT IS A BEAUTIFUL AND VERY HISTORIC PART OF ENGLAND. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK I WAS DESCENDED FROM JOCK HIMSELF. IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE A TALKING POINT WHEN SPEAKING TO OTHER FAMILY HISTORIANS! He married my gggrandmother, a Chickasaw Indian, but died in 1862 from an accidental poisoning. I and my family are Native American, so the Potts name has taken an interesting turn. My grandfather was Earnest Jarman Potts, born around 1887, came to Australia from England (Macclesfield) with his wife Charlotte Ann Stubbs, and their two children George and Norman. My mother was their third child born in Australia, her name is Olive. All contact was lost with the Potts family at that time. Grandfather was the youngest in a family of 6 boys and 2 girls. The boys were Harry Potts (postal worker Wilmslow), Tom Potts (Bridgewater Canal Officer in Manchester), Arthur Potts (head attendant Parkside Asylum), John Potts (head postal worker Cape Office South Africa), Fred Potts (traveller and detective), and the sisters' names I don't know. Their parents were Thomas Potts and Sarah Jarman Warmsley. Thomas had been a policeman for 26 years. I believe Thomas Potts used to do duty on the walls of Chester Bridge and saw the last public execution there. I don't know any of the wives names, some of them married though, children's names I'm aware of are Harry, Dorothy, Hugh and Phyliss. If anyone has any of theses names appearing in their ancestry list I would love to hear from them. Once again, a great site.
