Arnold Potts
BRIGADIER Arnold Potts had served with distinction in the Great War. During the inter-war years, despite the debilitating effects of a wound from the Western Front, he struggled to establish himself on the land near Kojonup in Western Australia.
With the advent of World War II, Potts became a driving influence in the training and early leadership of the West Australian 2/16th Battalion. When the 7th Division returned to Australia in March, 1942, Potts became the 21st Brigade's commander. On the Kokoda Trail, Potts, previously honoured by the army and revered by his brigade, led his soldiers into one of the most controversial yet triumphant campaigns in Australian military history. Yet when the Australian nation faced its most critical test on its own soil, the general who had previously praised both Potts and his men became a carping critic - a critic reflecting the widespread panic of the American Supreme Commander, General Douglas MacArthur, and of the Australian government.
