Origin of the STEWART NameMarjorie, the daughter of Robert the Bruce, and her husband Walter, 6th High Steward (or Stewart) of Scotland, produced the line of Stewart monarchs of Scotland and of Great Britain. Dougal Stewart founded the mighty Clan Stewart of Appin, Argyll. After the murder of Dougal's father, John Stewart of Lorn was only able to salvage from his inheritance the district of Appin in 1463. If the tartan known as Prince Charles Edward really was worn by Bonnie Prince Charlie and his followers in 1745, then this would be the earliest form in which the Royal Stewart tartan appeared. The Royal Stewart tartan is not a clan tartan, but the property of the Royal Family. The tartan in the background is the Stewart Old. From this page you can also view the Stewart dress tartan, Stewart Hunting. To find the Stewarts in my family tree click here. |
